Duration

4 minutes

Program Note

In this work, initially written as part of the Boston Conservatory’s High School Composition Intensive, two motifs are developed around and within each other. The first, introduced through a recurring gesture of aggressive swells, is a four note figure that resolves into the second: a folk song-like line accompanied by a haze of microtones and harmonics. The piece gradually grows in intensity and desperation, eventually culminating in a cathartic scratch tone, out of which the folk song melody returns, concluding the work in a state of relative tranquility.
