Program Note
“frozen sun” is the username of an otherwise anonymous account on the website poemhunter.com. Between February and April of 2014 this account published 35 poems in broken English, largely dealing with themes of unrequited love and betrayal. The name “frozen sun” itself appears to derive from the first poem they published, entitled “Seven Days In A Dark”: “since you have gone/since i felt down and sad/sun became frozen.” This piece, Two Kitchen Songs, sets two of their poems for voice and piano.
Given the spare, haunted quality of the text, I was moved to set these poems in as simple a manner as possible, while still hinting at the emotional complexity that lies frozen below the surface.
